Making Your Own Video Productions

Posted under Creative Ideas by Fenton on Thursday 28 May 2009 at 10:43 pm

The Social Web is a fun playground to explore, with sites like YouTube making it easy to find and watch interesting video content. But what if you are tired of just watching and commenting? What if you want to get in on the action as a producer of your own content? We asked Carter Harkins, owner of Harkins Creative, a fun web video production services company, what he thought about the user-generated video revolution.

“It’s so much fun! Putting something on the web for others to see is a real high,” Carter said. “Tools like YouTube make it super easy and fast to get your work online, too.”

So how does one go about producing a video for the web?

“Pretty much like you would think. You get a web cam or a camcorder, get some footage, import it into your computer, edit it with software like iMovie or Windows Movie Maker or Adobe Premiere Elements for a little more advanced effects. Upload it to YouTube, and they take care of the rest. Takes a little time, but it’s fun.”

So what do you think? Care to try out your film making chops against Scorcese or Spielberg? No? Well, that’s okay, you’ll still have fun sharing your life in motion with friends and family!

Profile of Joyce Johnson Rouse

Posted under Reviews by Fenton on Friday 22 May 2009 at 8:14 pm

Joyce Johnson Rouse is a Quaker singer-songwriter based in a town where there’s no shortage of tunesmiths. But she’s distinctive not only because she’s a practicing Quaker, but because she uses her music to raise awareness about the ecology and the environment. Rouse’s musical career is a ministry to the earth. She changed the way she viewed music almost 15 years ago after feeling spiritually inspired to use her music to educate people about the environment. She began performing under the name of Earth Mama, and even trademarked the name as a performing artist.

Rouse writes songs with varying themes, but they almost always have a central message that all things are connected, that if we find that still small voice of God inside, our actions will be tipped towards justice, love, reconciliation and right action. Her songs have been featured in movies and on syndicated environmental and activist radio programs around the world. They have been used extensively in educational venues and by international environmental and peace organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, UNESCO, and International Earth Charter. Her commercial jingles and theme songs have been featured in a National Park celebration, historic preservation projects and family festivals. She received a graduate degree in Earth Literacy from Indiana’s St . Mary of the Woods College in 2002.

Working in a Newsroom

Posted under Information by Fenton on Monday 18 May 2009 at 12:46 am

The strange thing about a newsroom is that the reporters have very little separation from one another. You can’t escape to a cubicle, because there are none. You’d probably have more privacy in a call center. A newsroom is noisy and exciting, but it can also be an extremely frustrating and annoying environment. In my last reporting job, one of the young reporters was so loud I couldn’t hear myself when I was interviewing. I couldn’t concentrate when I was writing, so I bought ear plugs. I could have been talking to the mayor, a well-known author or a famous musician, and I’ve had to keep asking them to repeat themselves. Not an ideal situation.

Why didn’t I just tell my fellow reporter to be quiet? Well, reporters don’t usually want to tread on the individual style of their brethren. They are generally individualistic, even eccentric and stubborn. There’s a pact between us to honor the quirks. We support one another through the stressful times. Deep down I know this loud young reporter was a little intimidated when he talked to officials, making his voice sounds assertive, authoritative and loud likely gave him the confidence he needed to get through the day.
