Save Money – Shop Online!

Posted under Information by Fenton on Monday 30 August 2010 at 10:40 pm

Shopping online is fast, and convenient. After all, you have every type, style, and price point of whatever you are shopping for – all at your fingertips. Many websites bring designer labels and expensive products to the homes of Americans, yet shopping online does not have to be costly. There are many helpful websites that provide quality products at affordable prices.

Overstock.com is a great place to shop for apparel, outdoor gear, and even furniture at discounts. Overstock buys the “extra” inventory from a large amount of sellers, so they can give their shoppers the best possible deals. eBay com is another great website for the online shopper on a budget. eBay is consumer driven,  because shoppers “bid” on products to get the best deal. eBay.com sells almost anything you can think of, from antiques and other used goods, to furniture, computers and more. Zappos.com is known for selling designer label clothing and shoes at slashed prices, and they carry all the latest styles. With so many options for online shoppers, and so many discounts to take advantage of, you can avoid the mall, and department store prices.

How to Avoid Heat Exhaustion

Posted under Information by Tracy on Tuesday 10 August 2010 at 10:35 pm

In the hottest of summer months, it’s hard to avoid overexposure to the sun and potentially harmful temperatures. When temperatures soar to the 90s and above, it is vital to your health to take care of your body and avoid heat exhaustion. If you’re going to be outside for a long period of time, drink plenty of water, even if you’re not thirsty. Oftentimes, if you become very thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Bring more water than you think you need wherever you go.

If you are planning on being in the sun, be sure to take plenty of breaks to sit in the shade. Don’t wait until you’re overheated and/or tired, as these are the first signs of heat exhaustion. If you’re playing sports or hiking in the sun, rest every 15-20 minutes and drink water to avoid dangerous heat exhaustion. Lastly, don’t sit in a hot car during blazing summer months and NEVER leave pets and children in a hot car. Not only is there no ventilation, but cars also heat up at an accelerated rate during hot summer months. Stay out of danger this summer and stay cool.

Learn About Organic Foods

Posted under Information by Jason Austin on Saturday 7 August 2010 at 9:16 pm

Organic food is growing in popularity, as people are becoming more conscious about how the foods they eat affect their bodies, and our world. Organic foods are made without chemicals, and organic meats are often grown with stringent “cruelty free” policies. Eating organic foods (vegetables, dairy, grains) have been shown to improve health, and offer a cleaner diet, without unnatural, synthetic products that are in a lot of processed foods.

Foods that are “certified organic” are often made in environmentally responsible ways. Many organic companies fashion their facilities with alternative forms of energy, such as solar power or wind power. Also, organic produce and grains are grown with the future of the Earth in mind, and cared for in a way that provides sustainable growth for years of crops, rather then the shortsighted way many corn and wheat crops are grown in America today. Nowadays, it is possible to enjoy a diet rich in nutrients, with ingredients that were grown with the future of the world in mind, as well as the health of our mind and bodies.

Can You Be Fit at Any Age?

Posted under Information by Fenton on Tuesday 6 April 2010 at 4:23 am

I got home from a physical this afternoon where my doctor informed me that I was very close to being diabetic. He has been bugging me for the last two years that my weight was growing and my health declining. He wasn’t telling me anything I didn’t know. I used to be in shape an active but once I got out of the field and took a promotion and desk job I just seemed to have blown up. So I wondered if I could get fit over 40.

So I took a little trip on the internet to find out what it really takes to get fit after years of neglect. Not only have I let my weight get out of hand but also but my knees and lower back are in sad shape as well. It hurts to just walk up and down the stairs to my home everyday. I have actually thought about selling my house to get rid of the stairs! Now I am realizing that if I don’t change my ways, I’m going to die sooner than later and I have a wife I want to grow old with and kids that I would like to see grown. I started reading about this P90X from a couple of people who have had some serious injuries in the past and have slowly overcome them and used this exercise program to get in shape. They actually show their progress, which gives me hope.

Poisonous Frogs

Posted under Information by Fenton on Friday 2 April 2010 at 10:43 pm

Poison Frogs are always fun to look at in the zoo or maybe even see in the wild if you have the opportunity. They have beautiful colors and are usually very small. They almost look like little globs of wet paint on leaves. The reason they are that color is to warn other animals and possible predators that the frogs are not good to eat. An interesting thing about these frogs is that their body does not create the poison like poisonous snakes. Poisonous frogs will eventually lose their poison if they are bred in captivity and even frogs that have been captured in the wild will eventually lose their poison.

The reason for this is that these frogs get their poison from the variety in their diet and from some of the insects that they tend to eat a lot of in the wild. So frogs that are captured or bred in captivity would not have the variety of food nor would they have access to the insects that they make their poison from. Another thing is that the frog’s poison does not go through skin so they are safe to touch as long as you have no open cuts and do not put your hands in your mouth.

Working Those Abs

Posted under Information by Fenton on Sunday 14 March 2010 at 3:33 am

Often, I hear people talk about how they do not like to workout day after day after day. They say that they get super sore and the “delayed muscle soreness” makes it OK to hold off for a day and not work out. Well, when you stop working out for awhile you lose all that progress and you end up starting back at the beginning. There are some positive and easy solutions to this situation.

One of the simplest solutions is to schedule the workouts for different areas of the body. One of the best things to work out are the abs and one great thing about working the abs is that you don’t have to do it every single day to get great results. If you work those abs three times a week you will be good to go but you need to work them correctly. Yes, you will get sore but you will definitely make progress even through the soreness.

So, with that in mind, consider a daily workout program that alternates and gives you different workouts each day for the different parts of your body; quadriceps, shoulders, arms, glutes, etc. This along with a couple of good cardio workouts and a sensible diet is a great way to lose weight and build strength.

Laundry Lessons

Posted under Information by Tracy on Wednesday 27 January 2010 at 6:07 pm

As a working mother of three active children and wife of a construction contractor I spend a great deal of time doing laundry. I am particular: the whites need to stay white and the darks need to stay dark. I have learned a few techniques along the way that are worth sharing.

One thing I do, that my mom taught me to do in the 1970’s when energy costs were at a premium, is I wash everything in cold water. Everything! I save the hot water for our bodies and our dishes. Hot water sets stains. Cold does not permit stains to set in clothing especially if the stain is pre-treated before being submerged in the washing machine.

Pre-treating stains is very important and saves time in the long run. Food, blood, grass all can be lifted from material by using Pine-sol or Dawn. Both function as degreasers and grease seems to be at the heart of most stains. Hydrogen peroxide is an effective product for blood removal, but the blood needs to be completely rinsed away, or the stain will just move on the fabric, not be removed altogether in the rinse water.

Pre –treating stains also helps with stains a person can only smell. Pine-sol is great as an all purpose disinfectant, so it removes stains that are visible and stains that are not. Keeping clothes cleaner longer keeps families smelling good and working together longer.

Starting a Business

Posted under Information by Tracy on Friday 22 January 2010 at 2:11 am

When the economy is down like it has been over the last 2 years, many people start their own businesses as an answer to being laid off or displaced. It has been proven that companies can do very well but it is also a very risky thing to do as most start ups fail with in the first year. So the very first thing you should do is track your money and see if you have enough to live on for several years if you make nothing. The number one reason companies fail is cash flow; that is they take money out of the company to pay personal bills and that squeezes the company dry of assets and money.

That is not to say that your company cannot make it if you don’t have 2 years living expenses but it is saying to use caution if you don’t. One of the things you can do if you don’t have the cash is to sit down and do very conservative yearly projections as to what you will bring in then over estimate your costs and see what you have left over. Divide that by 12 and see if it is enough to live on. If it is, you may have a chance to make it. If not, see if you can pick up a part time job to help with your living expenses and go for it! You will never know if you can do it unless you try. Another great place to get a ton of good information is the Small Business Administration.

US Housing Markets – Good and Bad

Posted under Information by Fenton on Sunday 10 January 2010 at 11:08 pm

In predicting the worse housing markets in the US, markets in 16 states made the list. This simply demonstrates how widespread the housing downturn has become as a result of the financial crisis that has griped the nation in the last two years. Despite the fallout of the credit crisis, there are housing markets that are projected to appreciate in some of the best markets as the nation starts on its road to recovery from the worst economy since the Great Depression in 2010.

It is not a surprise to note that New York, Nevada, Arizona, California, Rhode Island, Illinois, Connecticut, Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland, New York, Virginia, South Carolina and Oregon markets are projected to experience some of the worst housing deflation in the New Year. These states just continue to get hit over and over again as foreclosures are projected to worsen in 2010 with a new round sweeping the nation triggered by bank servicing companies that are ramping up efforts to recover their banking losses. As a result, a high number of markets will sustain double-digit deflation, which could hinder the recovery even further.

The Cause of Bank Failures

Posted under Information by Fenton on Thursday 10 December 2009 at 7:25 pm

Several weeks ago I ran into an acquaintance of mine at the local coffee shop were he told me the bank he worked for had just announced that the FDIC had taken over and the mortgage division he worked in was completely shut down because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac cut off their funding. This placed an additional one hundred and fifty five people on the unemployment line. To clarify, this bank was seventy six years old and had been a strong regional lender for mortgages fro decades. So I asked what did them in.

I was surprised by the answer: builders defaulting on their loans. Come to find out that one of the things that has hurt so many regional and small banks were lending to local builders in and around their communities. The economic downturn has been very hard on these guys and even though your retail residential mortgage is making ten million dollars a year, the bank can potentially take a hit of ten million form one builder! Multiply that a couple of times and you have a big problem. Why the government has not helped some of these smaller banks that lend directly into their communities is beyond me but it would stand to reason that this is just the types of banks they should be helping.
